With clay, touching is essential. Clay gives kinesthetic pleasure. It is so easy to forget oneself in the trance of creative work. It is multi-sensory and more tactile than nearly any other material.

As a teacher and practitioner of character and story development for animation and games, I have found that many books and courses on screenwriting and animation pre-production recommend writing as the primary creativity support tool. Whereas I saw visual and tactile creativity support tools as a more effective creativity tool for animation, which is after all, a visual medium. I found too that my students were more likely to have kinaesthetic and visual learning styles, so privileging literary creativity support tools in animation pedagogy didn’t make sense to me.
